Mile Relay Team Takes District First Place
Weiner Ties for Honors
As Eagles Drop Matches
The Woodward Bulldogs, with all four golfers under 80,
won the Southwestern Ohio District golf championship at
California golf course last Friday. The Eagle strokers
finished in fourth place, seven strokes behind second place
St. Xavier.
The bright spot for the Eagles was the fine performance
turned In by captain Dave
Welner. Dave, along with
three other boys, Ted Beattie,
of Mariemont; Dick Brockhoff,
of Oak Hills; and John Wagner,
of Woodward; finished in a tie
for medalist honors with four
over par 75'S.
Since Dave played in the
number two position he was
the last to come in and had a
chance to win the medal on
the last hole by taking a par
four. However, much to Dave's
dismay, he sliced his drive
out of bounds for a two-stroke
penalty. But he followed this
bad shot with a good drive, a
beautiful ll-iron, and a 20-foot
putt to throw the tournament
Into a four-way deadlock.
To decide who would repre-
sent Cincinnati at Columbus
next week-end, a sudden death
play off was held. Beattie
won the medalist honors on the
first hole and Wagner the run-
ner-up honors on the third hole
ilarvin's 78, and Rick Schatz's
79.
Last year when the Eagles
came in third they tallied a
total of 303. However, Califor-
nia was playing extremely long
this year and the scores were
much higher than expected.
Bill Waxman's 70 took medal-
ist honors last year, while
there were at least five boys
under 75 last year.
Earlier in the week Walnut

ward for the PHSL golf champ-
ionship, 7-5, at Avon Fields.
In the triangular meet the
Eagles edged Withrow 6V2-5

finish.

Walnut Hills lost its second game to Western Hills last
Thursday, 4-3, in extra innings. West High had previously
blanked the Eagles, 11-0. Last Thursday's victory over
Withrow ended Walnut Hills' losing streak, which had been
upped to six when defeated by Western Hills.
Eagle pitcher Rick MeAl-
lister held the Maroon Mus-
tangs to foot hits through eight
innings. But a single, a sac-
rlflee bunt. and a double en-
abled Western llills to score
the winning tun in the top of
the ninth.
The Eagles wasted no time
in getting to the Maroon's start-
ing pitcher for three runs.
Richard Dearwotth and Tee
Metcalfe walked. Dave Bath-
away singled in Dearworth, and
Dick Gordon doubled, scoring
fective as Bossy. Jim Lippert
led off with a single, and was
forced at second by Bobby
Brown. Brown then stole sec-
ond, but was later out attempt-
ing to swipe third, thus ending
the Eagles' threat.

PHSL leaders, the withrow
Tigers last week by a score
of 5-3. Tee Metcalfe, who had

Eagles Finish Close Fifth Place
by ann Talley
In the PHSL championship track meet that had been
postponed for 11 days, Walnut Hills placed a close fifth.
The finals, which were held last Monday, saw the Taft
Senators rack up a record total of 93 points.
The Eagles' team was once again led by its two fine
sprint men, Stew Haines and
Randy Katz. Their speed ac-
counted for all but one of the
Eagles' 17 points. This point
was earned by Dick Lotspeich
who took fifth place in the
discus throw.
In Walnut Hills' strongest
event of the afternoon, the 440,
Stew and Randy placed first
and third respectively. Coast-
en had a first, a record in the
220 event, with a 21.8; Stew
had a 22 flat.

for the Eagles, the mile relay,
